CHC/SEK earns Child Passenger Safety Station of the Year Award

CHC/SEK Child Passenger Safety Technicians make sure a car seat is installed properly.

The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas (CHC/SEK) earned the 2024 Child Passenger Safety Station of the Year award from the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office for its continuing efforts to check car seat installations for caregivers in their communities.

“Over half of car seats are installed improperly because people don’t know what to look for,” Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office’s Cynthia Callaway said.

CHC/SEK Child Passenger Safety Technicians checked 53 seats in 2023. Barton County Health Department, which also received the Child Passenger Safety Station of the Year Award, checked 65 seats.

“With these awards, we want to recognize their outstanding commitment and perseverance,” said Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office Director Tenille Kimberlin.

Child Passenger Safety Technicians go through an extensive four-day course from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through the non-profit organization Safe Kids Worldwide. The technicians check to ensure car seats are properly installed, the child is properly restrained, and the seats have not exceeded their expiration date or been recalled.

Studies have shown that a staggering 95 percent of parents leave the hospital with their car seats improperly installed. To address this issue, CHC/SEK operates a car seat check station. People can find a station near them through online listings such as the Kansas Traffic Safety Resources Office site.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. That’s why Car Seat Certified Station Technicians advocate for families by providing them with additional information that could save their child’s life. Many Southeast Kansas families are low-income, and several have to forgo car seats to pay for other amenities. Being a Certified Car Seat Station allows CHC/SEK to purchase car seats at no cost to families.

Look at CHC/SEK’s social media for Car Seat Certified Station events. People can contact a Family Resouces Specialist to make an appointment with a Child Passenger Safety Technician at 620-231-9873. Your child does not have to be a CHC/SEK patient to have their seat checked.
