Dr. Bean, family bikes across Kansas

Dr. Linda Bean and her family recently hopped on their bicycles and covered over 450 miles across Kansas as part of the annual Biking Across Kansas tour.

Team Bean Boozled consisted of Dr. Bean, her husband, Mike, children Micah (age 17), Jackson (age 15), Bella (age 7), and brother-in-law, Gerry. They prepared for 2-3 months before the trip by going on bike rides after school/work with longer rides on the weekends.

Dr. Bean, who is the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas Chief Clinical Officer, was optimistic but knew this was going to be a long ride for the kids, particularly Micah who was skeptical about spending the week touring Kansas on a bike. Her daughter Bella, however, had the time of her life mostly riding her bike once the team arrived at the destination town.

“Well, I survived the trip!” Dr. Bean says when she gets back. “We actually had a great time, even Micah enjoyed it more than she thought she would.”

They toured from Tribune to Atchison. Dr. Bean biked 243 miles, splitting the difference to take turns driving the car that followed behind. Her longest day was 52 miles.

“We had wind, heat, hills and a couple of storms but Kansas is truly more beautiful when you take the road less traveled,” Dr. Bean says. “We camped in tents at the local schools and parks – except the day we were chased inside to sleep in the gym during a strong thunderstorm in Scott City.”

After biking 2-3 hours per day, she was in charge of setting up the tents, which she can now do in under 5 minutes!

“We met some great people, ate some great food and swam in every pool between Tribune and Atchison,” Dr. Bean says. “It was quite an experience, but I am happy to be home and still believe SEK is the best place to be!”
