Wesley House summer celebration set for June 21

Wesley House and the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas will be hosting a Summer Celebration on June 21, on the west lawn of Wesley House, located at 12th and Joplin, Pittsburg.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, and watermelon will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a brief ceremony at noon. This event coincides with the United Way’s Day of Caring, during which community members will also beautify the grounds outside of Wesley House.

Leah Gagnon, CHC/SEK senior director of patient engagement, emphasizes that the event is not a fundraising activity. Instead, she encourages those interested to join the celebration to better understand and approach perceptions around people experiencing homelessness.

“We are going to celebrate our clients who overcame homelessness, found their way into recovery and housing, and reclaimed healthy and self-sufficient lives, as well as others who have helped them on their journey,” she said.

Since November of 2022, when CHC/SEK assumed management of Wesley House, 95 guests of Wesley House have moved into appropriate housing, removing themselves from the street and other dangerous situations.

“Our Summer Celebration is a day to believe we can rise above our current challenges and that by working together, we can help end homelessness in our communities,” Gagnon said.
